Fu Dog – Day 15

This Fu Dog is presumably male and is a professional ceramic sculpture with celadon glaze by artist Miyanaga Tozan (1868-1941) of Kyoto, Japan.

Did you know that Japanese Fu Dogs (at least many of the ones I’ve seen) are rarely with cub or ball and almost always have the mouth open? These standing, open mouthed Fu Dogs, without accessories, seem to partake of a more active, almost aggressive, ‘guardian lion’ interpretation – much more so than their Chinese and India-based relatives.

  1. Mouth ope - female (sic!)
    Mouth closed - male
